SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The UNC Asheville baseball team opened its three-week road swing with a 9-2 victory over Wofford College on Wednesday night, with Joe Tietjen and Kyle Carruthers leading the offensive attack.
Tietjen gave the Bulldogs (12-13) three hits and four RBI from his leadoff spot in the batting order, while Carruthers delivered a three-run homer off the bench to pace Asheville.
Reliever Spencer Orr tossed four innings out of the bullpen, holding Wofford (20-7) to just one run and one hit, to earn his third win of the season. Starter Lucas Clarke tossed three innings for the Bulldogs, striking out three batters while allowing just three hits in a rare midweek start for the left-hander.
The hosts took the lead the fourth inning when Carson Waln stole second base before stealing third and scampering home on a throwing error on the steal attempt, but the Bulldogs answered in the top of the fifth. They first tied the score when Pete Guy scored on a Wofford error before taking the lead for good on Carruthers' three-run homer over the left field wall later in the frame.
The scoring continued with Tietjen's grand slam in the top of the eighth inning, pushing Asheville to an eight-run advantage. Wofford would plate one run on an RBI double in the bottom of the eighth but would get no closer as the Bulldogs won their second game in as many days.
Asheville jumps back into Big South Conference play with a three-game weekend set at Gardner-Webb, marking their first conference road series of the season. The series opens Friday night with a 6 p.m. first pitch.
