Jones and Buckner Honored by Big South Conference

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The UNC Asheville women's basketball team had two players honored by the Big South Conference on Monday as the league announced its annual award winners for the 2014-15 season.

 

Senior guard Shonese Jones was named Honorable Mention All-Conference, while senior forward Jeannie Buckner was named to the league's All-Academic team.

 

Jones is Asheville's leading scorer with a 12.2 average. She leads the Bulldogs in three-pointers made (62). Shonese leads the Big South Conference in league games in three-point percentage (.431) and three-pointers made (2.65). She scored a season-high 27 points at Coastal Carolina on Saturday and has scored at least 20 points in three of the last four games. The Etowah native and former Brevard HS standout is the only player on this year's Asheville team to start and play in all 29 games.

 

Buckner is a senior majoring in biology and neuroscience. She carries a 3.73 GPA and has been accepted into medical school. She is Asheville's second leading rebounder with a 5.2 average and is second in blocked shots with 10. Jeannie has started for the Bulldogs in 27 of Asheville's 29 games.

 

UNC Asheville is seeded eighth in the 2015 Big South Conference Championships and will face ninth-seeded Coastal Carolina on its home floor in the first round of the tournament Tuesday night at 8 p.m.
