Meet the Bulldogs: Sophomore Tiffany Wilson

11.04.2015 | Women's Basketball

The UNC Asheville women's basketball team tips off its 2015-16 season at East Tennessee State Friday, Nov. 13. As an opportunity to “Meet the Bulldogs,” one student-athlete will be highlighted each day leading up to the start of the season. Today's featured Bulldog women's basketball player is sophomore Tiffany Wilson.

A 6-1 forward, Wilson appeared in all 31 games as a freshman last season. Three times she led the team in scoring, including posting a career-high 16 points against Furman (Dec. 10).

UNCABulldogs.com recently sat down with Wilson.

Tiffany Wilson

Sophomore

Jonesboro, Ga.

What is your major? “I am hoping to major in health and wellness promotions with a K-12 health and PE license and a minor in psychology.”

How long playing have you been playing basketball? “I've been playing basketball seriously since seventh grade. I played in fourth or fifth grade but I hated it. I was like 'don't pass me the ball, I'm just here.' In seventh grade I actually liked it and starting playing AAU.”

What is your favorite part about UNC Asheville? “My favorite part would have to be the scenery across the different seasons. Going through the quad with all the leaves or when it snows all over the quad, it's very enjoyable.”

Why did you choose to come to Asheville? “I ultimately chose to come here because I really liked the team, which is the most important thing because you have to deal with them for the next four years. The coaching staff is very, very nice. I especially liked the size of the campus, it was just far enough away from home where my mom couldn't pop up on me out of nowhere. The campus was big enough where it takes a little while to walk around but not too big where I can get lost or you have to wake up two hours before class just to get there.”

Is there anyone you try to model your game after? “I wouldn't say I try to model my game after anybody, I just try to play as hard as I possibly can, when I can. I try to add aspects to my game like shooting and persistency but nobody I really model my game after.”

Do you have any nicknames? “I would just say Tiff.”

All-time starting five, who would you want on your team? “Stephen Curry, Russell Westbrook, LeBron James, Andre Iguodala, and Shaq.”

Do you have a favorite saying from Coach Mock? “I think it would be 'you gotta grind' with the hand movement she does.”

What are three things you can't live without? Jesus has to be first, there's an order in this. Secondly my family, they are a packaged deal together so mom, dad, brother. Lastly, I wouldn't say my phone but just like electronics in general, so phone, iPad, iPod, laptop. As long as I'm connected to something and can see what's going on.”

What is the most played song on your iPod? “Well I actually don't have any music on my phone which is kind of weird. I just play Pandora. My top two stations I listen to would have to be the Walls Group which is a Christian gospel group and the other would have to be Braxton Teller.”

What is your favorite pregame meal? “Of my choosing or that they give us?”

Either one: “I would say my favorite pregame meal is when we get to go to the restaurant just because we get more variety. One time we went to a steak place and they let us get steaks and potatoes and stuff like that. It was a while before the game, but still I enjoyed that.”

Are there any movies you know the lines to? “It's kind of childish, but 'Frozen.'”

When I'm not on the basketball court, I am… “I am probably asleep, doing homework or watching Netflix/OnDemand.”

What's your Netflix show? “I like crime dramas, so anything to do with crime and or drama such as the Blacklist, or CSI, SVU, or NCIS or CSI Miami, all those things I watch.”

What are you most looking forward to this season? “I'm most looking forward to being back on the court, playing and having fun with my teammates and having that chemistry. Also to enjoy the season as a whole.”

If you could max out your credit card at one store, what store would it be? “Only one store? I would say Forever 21 just because they have so much stuff in there and it's kind of cheap sometimes.”

What's something most people may not know about you? “Most people may not know that I used to dance like ballet, tap, jazz for five years. I danced until seventh grade when I started playing basketball, then it was one of those 'you have to choose' moments.”

Are you the best dancer on the team then? “No, I would say Khaila (Webb).”

Do you have a favorite class you've taken here? “My favorite class so far would have to be sociology. I've never been introduced to some of those concepts in class, just thinking of society as a whole and different aspects of society like racism and things like that, it was interesting.”

When's the last time you took a selfie? “Let me just check just to verify (pulls out phone). I have a habit of looking at myself in my phone but not like necessarily taking a selfie. Last selfie was Oct. 18, it's been a while. I only take selfies when I look nice and I don't dress up here.”
