Meet the Bulldogs: Freshman Sonora Dengokl

The UNC Asheville women's basketball team tips off its 2015-16 season at East Tennessee State Friday, Nov. 13. As an opportunity to “Meet the Bulldogs,” one student-athlete will be highlighted each day leading up to the start of the season. Today's featured Bulldog women's basketball player is freshman Sonora Dengokl.
A 5-9 guard, Dengokl was named to the 2014 South Carolina 3A All-Region Team and the All-State Team while in 2015 she was named the HSSR Statewide Girls Player of the Year.
UNCABulldogs.com recently sat down with Dengokl.

Major? “Health and wellness.”
What nicknames do you have? “They call me NoNo.”
What is your favorite part about UNC Asheville? “I like the mountains. The environment is really pretty.”
What made you choose Asheville? “Probably the gym and the team.”
All-time starting five, who would you want on your team? “I want all five of them to be Stephen Curry. Him and his little minions.”
What are three things you can't live without? “My mom, food, and probably basketball.”
What about your mom's food? “No not my mom's food. My mom and food.”
What's your favorite food? “I guess it's a food, I eat cereal any time of the day. Probably cereal and I like ice cream and fries together.”
What kind of cereal? “Cinnamon toast crunch with milk.”
What are you most looking forward to this season? “Seeing what I can contribute to the team. Since the conference tournament is here this year, I think it will be a good experience for us as a team to see how that goes and see how far we can get.”
How long playing have you been playing basketball? “Since seventh grade, I don't know how many years that is.”
Who has been your biggest basketball influence? “I would probably be my head coach in high school, she played at High Point. Her name is Frances Fields. I met her my freshman year in high school and she's been my trainer slash mentor.”
If you could max out your credit card at one store, what store would you want it to be? “Probably Journeys. I love Vans, I'm a VanHead. I think I have at least 15 pairs right now.”
When's the last time you bought a pair? “I think it was last month. It was a new edition that came out. My favorite ones are my Hello Kitty ones because they don't make them anymore.”
When's the last time you took a selfie? “Probably like 15 minutes ago in study hall.”
What's something most people may not know about you? “That majority of the time my second toe – I had surgery on it – is always swollen. My team just saw it for the first time like two weeks ago and they were just so amazed because it's extremely swollen all the time. Nobody knows that, I guess that's kind of interesting.”
When I'm not on the basketball court, I am … “I am probably eating somewhere. Eating cereal.”
