Ryan Dull Earns First Major League Victory on Wednesday
10.01.2015 | Baseball
ANAHEIM, CA – Former UNC Asheville pitcher Ryan Dull earned his first Major League victory on Wednesday night when the Oakland Athletics defeated the Los Angeles Angels 8-7 on the road.
Dull came out of the bullpen to notch the final out of the sixth inning and then proceeded to fire a 1-2-3 shutdown seventh frame, keeping the A's 7-5 lead intact. Dull was hit for a solo home run off the bat of the Angels' Carlos Perez with one out in the eighth and exited the game, but Sean Doolittle came in to finish the frame and the game.
Wednesday night, Dull tossed 1 2/3 innings, allowing two hits and the one run while striking out one Angels hitter.
Dull bounced back nicely to earn the win out of the bullpen Wednesday after being saddled with his first major league loss in his last outing on September 26 against the San Francisco Giants. Against San Francisco, Dull had his worst statistical major league outing, allowing four runs in just 2/3 of an inning, allowing two hits, walking two batters and giving up a home run.
He earned his first major league save on September 18 at Houston, allowing just one walk to the Astros in an otherwise perfect two inning outing with a pair of strikeouts.
Since being called up to Oakland on September 1, Dull has made 11 total appearances out of the bullpen with the 1-1 record and one save with a 4.20 ERA. He has tossed 15 innings this month, allowing 10 hits, seven runs and three homers while striking out 14 total batters. Opponents are hitting just .192 against him.
While Oakland's season is winding down and will not feature a postseason appearance, Dull has pitched in some meaningful games. Six of his 11 appearances have come against teams competing for postseason spots. He has three appearances against the Los Angeles Angels, two appearances against the Houston Astros and an appearance against the Texas Rangers – all three of which are battling for the American League West Division title or a postseason spot as a Wild Card team.
Dull and Oakland wrap up their 2015 season with a three game series at the Seattle Mariners beginning Friday night.
