ASHEVILLE, N.C. – The UNC Asheville women's basketball team hits the road on Thursday night when they travel to defending Big South Conference champion Winthrop for a 7 p.m. contest.
Thursday's game will be video-streamed and can be seen for free on the Big South Network by clicking this link.
Asheville (3-10, 2-2 BSC) look to snap a four-game losing streak but it will not be easy against the Lady Eagles (7-6, 3-1 BSC)
Both teams are coming off losses. The Bulldogs fell at Presbyterian College, 69-57 Saturday afternoon. Winthrop lost to Gardner-Webb Monday night at home, 79-65.
"Winthrop has the best offense in the league right now which is even more reason to bring more defensive presence and discipline to our game. We are excited for another opportunity after under-performing against Presbyterian on Saturday,” stated Bulldog coach Brenda Mock Kirkpatrick. “Our kids are working hard right now and it's important to keep progressing and start playing better team basketball consistently. This league has a lot of parity which is exciting and Winthrop will bring another challenge on Thursday."
Sophomore guard Tianna Knuckles leads Asheville in scoring with a 10.2 average. Senior guard Shonese Jones is right behind her with a 10.1 mark. Senior forward Jeannie Buckner tops the club in rebounding with a 6.0 average. Senior guard Brittany Gwyn leads Asheville in assists (36) and steals (17).
The game with Winthrop is second of a three-game road swing for the Blue & White as the Bulldogs travel to Campbell Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m.
Asheville looks to end a six-game losing streak to the Lady Eagles. Winthrop has won 10 of the last 11 meetings between the teams. The Bulldogs last victory against the Eagles came on Feb. 28, 2011 when Asheville held off Winthrop, 66-61 in Rock Hill.
