ASHEVILLE, N.C. – A great turnout at Baseball Night in Asheville marked the unofficial start to baseball season on Friday night at Kimmel Arena.
Over 300 attendees, including 30 baseball alumni were on hand to ring in the new season. Along with first year Head Coach Scott Friedholm, Chancellor Mary K. Grant and Mike Shildt, the Manager of the Memphis Redbirds the AAA affiliate of the St. Louis Cardinals, headlined the event that included a live and silent auction.
“I think we had a great night tonight,” stated head coach Scott Friedholm. “If you had told me six months ago this was going to be the outcome, I would have thought you were crazy. A huge thank you goes out to our baseball committee who put this together. Mike Shildt was unbelievable. Chancellor Grant, [Athletics Director] Janet Cone, and [Emcee] Brian Hall did a terrific job.”
“Last year's event was really wonderful being the first one, and just when you think something can't get better, tonight did just that,” said Athletics Director Janet Cone. “Particularly having our new Chancellor here, our new head coach, and having the opportunity to have Tom Smith come back and be a part of the committee to make this night happen. It was a great turnout, there was a good spirit and it makes us all believe in the Bulldogs.”
Baseball season is just two weeks away and will begin on February 13 when the Ohio University Bobcats travel to Asheville to take on the Bulldogs in a three-game series.
