Track and Field at Hilton Garden Invitational on Friday

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The UNC Asheville men's and women's indoor track and field teams begin competition today at the Hilton Garden Invitational that will take place at the JDL Fast Track. The meet begins on Friday at 1 p.m. and will conclude late Saturday night.
“This will be another good test for our squad to see where we're at this point of the season,” explained Bulldog coach Jesse Norman. “We've had some good results so far throughout the team but we'll be challenged this weekend. This is a very good meet with a lot of good teams.”
The Bulldogs last competed two weeks ago at the ETSU Invitational.
A pair of Bulldogs finished second and third in the men's 5000 meter run, as Skyler Winchester posted a time of 16:02.64 and was followed closely by Ryan Catrine's 16:10.79 mark to start a day that saw Asheville place runners near the top of the results in a number of events.
In the men's one mile final, three Bulldogs placed in the top 15, led by David Hager's time of 4:29.87 as he finished fourth overall and four seconds off the winning pace. Nathan Kirse (4:42.73) finished 10th just ahead of Chilton Birdwhistell (4:45.91) in 14th place. The women's one mile run saw three Bulldogs finished in the top 20 of that race, as Katie Gamble (5:46.90), Scarlett Beamon (5:46.96) and Marissa Banks (5:47.24) finished 15th, 16th, and 17th, respectively.
The men's 800 meter run saw three Asheville runners in the top 15, led by Chase Stevens' seventh place finish with his time of 1:59.03. Jason Perry (2:01.75) finished 12th and Sergeneo Rankin (2:02.65) placed 14th. On the women's side, Maddie Lowe's time of 2:27.44 gave her a 11th place finish.
Both the men's and women's distance medley teams had good showings in their races, with the Bulldog women's team of Lowe, Anna Gelbach,, Alyssa Lashway and ErinDalton finishing sixth overall with a time of 13:00.33. The men's 'A' team of Hager, Rankin, Chase Stevens and Dominic Collichio finished seventh with a time of 10:54.03, while the Asheville 'B' team of Kirse, Perry, Birdwhistell and Catrine notched a time of 11:05.35 for a ninth place mark.
The duo of Casey Greenwalt and Kelsie Rubino each placed in the top ten of the women's one mile run, as Greenwalt's time of 5:13.54 was four seconds off the winning pace and gave her a third place finish. Rubino finished seventh with a time of 5:18.66.
