BUIES CREEK, N.C. – David Robertson scored 18 of his 21 points in the second half as UNC Asheville downed Campbell, 69-65 in Big South Conference action Saturday afternoon at Gore Arena.
The Bulldogs (8-8, 4-1 BSC) also got a double-double from senior center Jaleel Roberts with 14 points and 12 rebounds. Roberts went 7-of-7 from the field and scored 12 points in the second half.
Andrew Rowsey, despite being hampered by sickness, added 19 points. He scored 17 points in the first half and helped keep Asheville close. The Dogs trailed 35-32 at halftime.
“This is a great win on the road,” stated Bulldog coach McDevitt. “We got a great lift from everybody today. Campbell is a good team and is tough to beat on the road. I'm really pleased with our guys bouncing back after a tough loss to Winthrop on Wednesday.”
Freshman forward Ahmad Thomas added a career-best 10 points.
Campbell (7-12, 1-5 BSC) was led by Curtis Phillips with a season-high 16 points. Reco McCarter chipped in 12 points.
The Bulldogs took the lead early in the second half. Trailing 40-36, Asheville went on a 13-2 run to race to a 49-42 lead. Robertson hit three consecutive three-pointers to spark the run. All three treys came on assists from Rowsey. Roberts' first bucket of the second half completed the run at the 11:08 mark.
Campbell closed to 55-54 on a lay-up from DJ Mason at the 6:26 mark. The Bulldogs rallied and countered with an 8-1 run to push to a 63-55 lead. Robertson's trey at the 2:22 mark finished the run.
The Camels scored on three straight possessions but the Bulldogs hit six straight free throws in the final minute to hold on to the win.
“I thought we showed good poise down the stretch by hitting our free throws and getting some big stops,” added McDevitt. “We didn't turn the ball over in the final 10 minutes and that was a big key for us.”
Asheville shot 52.2 percent (24-of-46) from the field and 9-of-17 (52.9%) from beyond the arc.
UNC Asheville continues its two-game road trip at Charleston Southern Monday night at 7:30 p.m.
