GREENSBORO, N.C. – Emily Werth won two events to lead the UNC Asheville women's swimming to a split of a double-dual meet at North Carolina AS&T Saturday afternoon.

The Bulldogs easily defeated the host Aggies, 198-52 but fell to North Florida, 143-117.

Asheville battled not just its two opponents on Saturday but some sickness on the team, as well.

"The team fought hard and came away with one dominant win and fell just short of a second victory,” stated Bulldog coach Elizabeth Lykins. “Although a couple swimmers weren't able to race today due to illnesses and injury, team members pulled together to support each other.

"We will continue to train and prepare for championships next month,” added Lykins.

Werth captured the 200 backstroke with a time of 2:11.05. She also took first place in the 100 butterfly as she posted a mark of 1:00.48.

The Bulldogs won four other events on the day. Ashley Ireland finished first in the 50 freestyle at a time 25.10. Shannon Kennedy came in first in the 200 breaststroke at 2:32.83.

Stephanie Smith was the top finisher in the 100 backstroke at a time of 1:02.83. In the 200 freestyle, Alexandra van Dorsten finished first at a time of 1:58.39.

The Bulldogs will have the next two weekends off and will have their final home meet of the year at Justice Center Pool on Saturday, Jan. 31 when they host North Carolina A&T starting at Noon.
