ASHEVILLE, N.C. – Despite a huge advantage in shots and possession of play, UNC Asheville could not put the ball in the back of the net as Alabama State scored midway through the second half to escape with a 1-0 non-conference women's soccer win Friday night at T.C. Roberson.
The Bulldogs (3-2-0) out-shot the visitors 21-5 and had 9-2 corner kicks but fired wide and Hornet goalkeeper Kylee Hathaway made nine saves to earn her third shutout of the season.
Asheville's Kennedy Garrett scored with two seconds left to seemingly tie the game but the goal was wiped out due to an off-sides call.
The game's only goal came in the 65th minute. Sabina Claesson took a pass from Aailiyah Lewis and connected from six yards out into the left corner to give Alabama State (3-2-0) the lead for good.
That was the last shot of the game for the Hornets as the Bulldogs fired the final 10 shots of the match but could not score. Amanda Dailor had a shot from 10 yards out that hit the cross bar with six minutes left.
Asheville almost got the equalizer in the final seconds as Megan Foster sent a ball into the ASU goal area. Garrett was able to get her head on it and into the back of the net but the goal was quickly called back and the clock ticked to zero.
UNC Asheville returns to Greenwood Field Sunday afternoon when the Bulldogs host South Carolina State at 3:30 p.m.
