ASHEVILLE, N.C. – Sophomore Jackson Allen scored his third goal of 2014 while fellow underclassman Tevin Beckwith picked up his first as the UNC Asheville soccer team defeated Brevard College, 2-1, on Sunday afternoon at Greenwood Field.
The win is the first of the season for the Bulldogs, who opened up the year with a 3-3 tie against USC Upstate on Friday afternoon. Asheville is now 1-0-1 on the year.
"We are attempting to have more possession than our opponent, and score more goals." said Asheville head coach Matt Kern. "We did both today but it was difficult. Brevard did a good job getting numbers behind the ball and limiting the space in our attacking third."
The two teams battled back and forth over the first half, with BC taking four shots and Asheville taking five. The Bulldogs did force three corners in the opening frame, but were unable to connect on the opportunity.
However, in the second half Allen was able to put one in the back of the net after taking a through ball from Zach Joens that was redirected by Paul Egle to the feet of Allen. The Asheville native then blasted a shot from nine yards out going left to right in front of the keeper in the 49th minute.
Beckwith scored his goal in the 67th minute, stealing the ball from a defender on a miscommunication from the goalkeeper, bending it into the net while falling down past the end line to put the Blue & White up 2-0.
Brevard would not go down quietly, fighting until the very end. The Tornadoes were able to get a ball past the Bulldogs' defense going down the right side of the field, as Gabriel Pastrana crossed the ball from just outside the 18 to a waiting Jesse Omezi, who finished from eight yards out in the 89th minute.
The Bulldogs would be able to finish out the game without any further damage done to earn their first victory of 2014.
Asheville will be back in action next Friday when the Bulldogs host former Big South Conference foe VMI at Greenwood Field. The match is set to begin at 3 p.m. and is the first game of a doubleheader with the women's soccer team, who will take on Alabama State at 5:30 p.m.
