Liberty Hands Bulldogs First Conference Loss, 67-55

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – Ashley Rininger scored 22 points and grabbed 13 rebounds as Big South-leading Liberty downed UNC Asheville, 67-55 at Kimmel Arena Tuesday evening.
The Bulldogs (3-9, 2-1 BSC) were led by Chatori Major with 11 points. Freshman Bronaza Fitzgerald added nine points and six rebounds.
Karly Buer added 15 points for Liberty, while Jaymee Fisher-Davis chipped in 10 points. The Lady Flames improved to 7-5 overall and stayed perfect in the league at 3-0.
Liberty led 31-25 at halftime and slowly expanded the lead in the second half. The Lady Flames hit three treys in the first 10 minutes of the half and got a lay-up from Mickayla Sanders at the 8:49 mark to push the margin to 54-38.
The Bulldogs could get no closer than 12 the rest of the game as the home team shot 39 percent (10-of-26) from the field in the second and went 0-of-5 from long distance.
Asheville shot 35 percent (18-of-52) from the field for the contest. LU knocked down 42 percent (21-of-50) of its field goals. The visitors did a great job from the free throw throughout the contest as they went 21-of-26 for 81 percent. The Flames were 13-of-16 in the second half as they made their first 12 free throws of the second stanza.
UNC Asheville starts a three-game road trip Saturday afternoon at Presbyterian College starting at 2 p.m.
