Men's Basketball Downs Brevard in Exhibition 81-58

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – Andrew Rowsey and freshman guard Kevin Vannatta scored 18 points each as UNC Asheville downed Brevard 81-58 in exhibition basketball action Saturday night at Kimmel Arena.
The Bulldogs used a strong second-half surge to pull away from pesky Tornados to win their fifth straight exhibition contest.
David Roberson added 11 points for the Blue & White. Brevard was led by Stevie Williams with 13 points. Darius Moose added 12 points and seven rebounds. Phil Wallace had a game-high 10 assists for the visitors.
Asheville led 47-41 with 12 minutes left before going on a 22-2 run over the next four minutes to seize control of the game. Freshman Alex Wnuk started the run with two steals and lay-ups. The home team connected on three straight 3-pointers and then got a three-point play from Sam Hughes. Corey Littlejohn ended the run with a lay-up to push the Dogs in front 69-43.
The Bulldogs held a 41-22 rebounding advantage as six different Asheville players pulled down at least four rebounds. The home team held a 20-0 edge in second-chance points.
Brevard led 18-14 in the opening half after a trey from D.J. Bostick at the 12-minute mark. Asheville held the Tornados scoreless over the next five minutes as it scored 12 consecutive points to build a 26-18 lead. Vannatta led the run with six points. He also had two steals during the run.
UNC Asheville opens the 2014-15 season at Wake Forest Friday night at 7 p.m.
