JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. – ETSU tied a school-record by knocking down 15 three-pointers as the Buccaneers held off UNC Asheville 98-87 Saturday night at Freedom Hall.

 

The Bulldogs (2-2) were led by Andrew Rowsey with 29 points, while Kem Ubaru added 17 points. David Robertson and Kevin Vannatta added 14 points.

 

Asheville shot .520 (27-of-52) from the field and knocked down 14 treys but was undone by 23 turnovers. The Buccaneers outscored the Dogs 31-16 on points off turnovers.

 

“We turned the ball over way too much tonight,” stated Bulldog coach Nick McDevitt. “Our guys battled and fought back, but you don't beat a team like ETSU on the road with 23 turnovers.”

 

ETSU went 15-of-33 from long distance and shot .533 (32-of-60) from the field. The Bulldogs shot .520 (27-of-52) from the field and went 14-of-29 (.483) from long distance.

 

The Bulldogs trailed by 15 with at 67-52 with 12 minutes left but roared back to close within four at 88-84 on a Rowsey trey with 3:36 left.

 

ETSU led 89-84 as Asheville had two chances to get close but misfired on both possessions. The Bucs then got four quick points on a lay-up and a turnover and steal to push the margin to 93-84.

 

ETSU went 5-of-6 from the free throw line in the final minute to preserve the victory.

 

UNC Asheville plays at South Carolina Wednesday night at 8 p.m. The game will be televised by the SEC Network.
