Bulldogs Fall 63-46 at North Carolina A&T

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNC Asheville women's basketball team got out-rebounded 40-29 and fell on the road at North Carolina A&T, 63-46, Tuesday night at the Corbett Sports Center.
The Bulldogs (0-2) allowed the Aggies (2-0) to collect 20 offensive rebounds which resulted in 18 second chance points and enabled NC A&T to pull away after leading just 25-23 at the halftime.
Asheville jumped out to an early 9-8 lead after Shonese Jones connected on her first three field goal attempts and Tiffany Wilson converted a layup with 12:25 left to play in the half. The Aggies answered with a 6-0 run to grab a 14-9 advantage and extended the lead to 19-13.
Trailing by six, the Bulldogs picked up the pressure by extending its defense full court which immediately paid off with a six point run to tie the score at 19-19 with 5:08 left in the half. Wilson started the spurt by sinking a two free throws, followed by a pair of steals which led to layups for Tianna Knuckles and Brittany Gwyn.
Trailing 25-20 with 16 seconds left in the half Gwyn initiated the offense and passed to Knuckles on the elbow. Knuckles drove the lane forcing the defense to collapse and allowing her to pass to Paige Love in the corner who knocked down a three with two seconds left on the game clock.
North Carolina A&T opened the second half with a 16-4 run over the first seven minutes of the half to stretch their lead to 41-27. Aprill McRae, who scored a game-high 22 points, scored seven during the run for the Aggies who never looked back and stretched the lead to as much as 21 points.
Paige Love led the Bulldogs with 14 points, including 9-for-11 from the foul line which all came in the second half. KJ Weaver led all players with seven rebounds. After shooting 39.1% from the field in the first half, Asheville struggled from the field going 5-for-21 in the second half.
North Carolina A&T shot 43.9% from the field for the game and were led by McRae's 22 points. Christina Carter added 15 points and three assists for the Aggies. McRae was the leading rebounder, collecting six boards.
The Bulldogs return to action on Saturday when they travel to Tampa to take on the University of South Florida at 2:00 p.m.
