Men's Soccer Tops UMASS, 2-1 in OT

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – Jackson Allen's golden goal early in overtime gave UNC Asheville a thrilling 2-1 victory over visiting UMASS Thursday evening at Greenwood Field.
The Bulldogs (2-8-3) ended a 10-game winless streak with the overtime triumph. The Minuteman fell to 2-13-1 on the season.
Asheville goalkeeper Dan Jackson made nine saves for the Blue & White in the match. UMASS had the run of play early in the game and for parts of the second half but Jackson was able to keep the visitors to just one goal.
Tied at 1-1 as overtime began, the Bulldogs quickly countered after a Minuteman possession. Zach Joens made a nice run and got the ball to Allen. The sophomore connected from six yards out at 90:47 to give the Blue & White the victory.
Allen also had a key role in Asheville's first goal. Trailing 1-0 at halftime, the Bulldogs controlled play early in the second half. Allen made a nice move to get around goalkeeper Taylor Culp and head for a wide-open goal. Culp grabbed Allen in the box and threw him to the ground. The Bulldogs were quickly awarded a penalty kick.
Senior midfielder Paul Egle connected on the PK at 47:04 to knot the match at 1-1. It was the Bulldogs first PK of the season.
UMASS opened the scoring and dominated play early, The Minuteman took the first six shots of the match and scored at 15:21. Josh Schwartz's shot was saved by Jackson but the ball went right to Matt Mooney. Mooney quickly swooped in and scored to put the visitors in front, 1-0.
Asheville controlled play for the second half of the first stanza and outshot UMASS after the goal, 7-3.
Each team had 17 shots in the match. Victor Aguiar almost won the game in the 87th minute when his direct kick hit the cross bar.
UNC Asheville plays its final home game of the season on Sunday when the Bulldogs host Big South rival Longwood at 1 p.m. It will be Senior Day as the school will honor its six seniors prior to the match.
