ASHEVILLE, N.C. – UNC Asheville goalkeeper Dan Jackson made nine saves as the Bulldogs battled to a 1-1 Big South Conference tie with #22 Winthrop Saturday evening at Greenwood Field.
Asheville (1-6-3, 0-3-2 BSC) was 12 minutes away from a stunning upset before the Eagles' Patrick Barnes tied the match at 1-1.
But that was the only goal Jackson would give up on the day as the Bulldogs earned a point against Winthrop (9-2-1, 3-0-1).
The Eagles controlled most of the match and had a 29-7 advantage in shots, including a 19-3 advantage in the second half and the two overtime periods.
The Bulldogs stunned Winthrop in the first half with their goal. Emil Gonsalvez sent a ball toward the Eagle goal that was stopped briefly by goalkeeper Guilherme Avelar. He couldn't control the ball and Alex Eden scooped it up and scored to give the home team a 1-0 lead at 23:19.
Winthrop just missed tying the match late in the first half when an Eagle shot hit the goal-post as the Bulldogs held a 1-0 lead at halftime. The visitors held a 10-4 advantage in shots in the opening half.
Asheville just missed making it 2-0 early in the second half when a Jackson Allen shot just went wide on a semi-breakaway.
Winthrop dominated the second half as it continued to create high-quality scoring chances. A shot from Max Hasenstab of Winthrop was cleared off the line by a Bulldog defender.
Finally the Eagles scored. Jordan Stoddard sent a pass to Pol Sole. Sole made a perfect pass to Barnes who scored from 10 yards out to knot the game at 1-1 at 78:22.
Jackson made three saves in the second overtime period to keep Winthrop off the scoreboard.
UNC Asheville is on the road at non-conference foe Northern Kentucky on Wednesday night at 6 p.m. The Bulldogs next BSC match is at Liberty next Saturday (Oct. 25) at Noon.
