ASHEVILLE, N.C. ? Emil Gonsalvez scored in the 85th minute to lead UNC Asheville to a 2-1 victory over Howard on the first day of the Asheville Invitational in men's soccer action at Greenwood Field Friday afternoon.

In the first game, Radford's Bernardo Ulmo scored in the 68th minute as the Highlanders edged Georgia Southern 2-1.

The Bulldogs(3-3-0) and Bison (0-6-0) played more than seventy minutes of scoreless soccer before the teams combined for three goals in a 12-minute span.

The match was tied 1-1 and looked like it was headed to overtime before Stabler Cochrane was able to corral a ball in the box and passed it to Gonsalvez who tucked the ball into the back of the net for a 2-1 Asheville lead at 85:07.

The home team had opened the scoring at 73:35 when Quentin Reynolds notched his second goal of the season off a perfect pass from Hans Lohmeyer for a 1-0 Bulldog lead.

Howard struck eight minutes later when Frederick Todd III headed in a perfect pass from Rahman Alarape at 81:44.

Howard goalkeeper Eric Hamilton played very well in defeat with seven saves. Asheville had a 17-11 edge in shots.

In the first game, Radford (2-2-1) struck early when Joe Mayer scored on a breakaway off a feed from Jamie Summers at 2:04.

The Highlanders dominated the rest of the first half with a 9-3 edge in shots but could not score again.

Georgia Southern (2-4-0) got the equalizer at 48:15 when Reed Norton fed his brother Hunter Norton for a goal to knot the match at 1-1.

Ulmo scored on another breakaway off passes from Bismark Amofah and Nico Valencia.

Neal Bates of GSU made seven saves, while Dane Wilson of Radford stopped five shots.

The Asheville Invitational will continue on Sunday as Radford will face Howard and Noon, followed by UNC Asheville and Georgia Southern at 2:30 p.m.
