ASHEVILLE, N.C. - The UNC Asheville baseball team returns to Greenwood Field this weekend as the Bulldogs host Morehead State in a three-game series starting Friday at 3 p.m. The teams will play single games on Saturday and Sunday starting at 1 p.m.
Asheville (7-7) has run into some tough pitching this weekend against Furman and defending national champion South Carolina. The Paladins downed the Bulldogs, 6-1 at Greenwood Field Tuesday and the Gamecocks silenced the Asheville bats Wednesday night in an 8-1 USC victory.
"We're not hitting the ball as well as I'd like us to see us hit it," commented Bulldog coach Tom Smith. "We're looking forward to playing three games this weekend at home and see if we can put some runs across the board."
This will be the first ever meeting between Morehead State and UNC Asheville. The Eagles from the Ohio Valley Conference are 6-7 on the season.
"Morehead State has a good ballclub and has posted some good wins on the year," added Smith. "Hopefully, we can swing the bats a little better than we've been doing lately."
Senior second baseman Jordan Lurie continues to lead the Bulldogs in hitting this season as he'll take a .389 average into Friday's action. Junior DH Billy Creighton is hitting .364 with three home runs and 18 RBI.
On the mound, senior right-hander Ryan Dull (2-1, 2.41 ERA) is the expected starter on Friday. Adam Spracklin and Dillon Tabar have done a nice job out of the bullpen so far this season. Spracklin has a 1.08 ERA, while Tabar is at 1.12.
Chase Greenwell is having a monster at the plate for the Eagles. He's hitting .442 in 13 games for Morehead State. Matt Duncan has two saves and a 1.12 ERA for the Eagles out of the bullpen.
