Men's Tennis Downs Winthrop 6-1

ASHEVILLE, N.C. - The UNC Asheville men's tennis team concluded the week on Sunday with another historic victory.
The Bulldogs (9-6, 2-0 BSC) rolled past Big South Conference foe Winthrop, 6-1 at the Asheville Racquet Club downtown Sunday afternoon. It was Asheville's first victory over the Eagles since the 1998 season when the Bulldogs edged Winthrop, 4-3.
Asheville was in command for most of the match as the Bulldogs took the doubles point to grab a 1-0 lead. The #1 flight of Jonas Brobeck and Matt Waissen continued their good work this season with an 8-3 win over Guy Kube and Nadav Ruppin. The Bulldogs got the point when Thomas Rees and Adrien Langeard won at #2 over Rich Mead and Dylan Comerford, 8-5.
In singles action, the Bulldogs won five of the six matches with two wins coming in three sets. Thomas Rees won at #4 flight as he rallied past Rich Mead, 3-6, 6-1, 6-4. Ryan Matthews won at #5 as he edged Luka Stanic, 7-6, 0-6, 10-3.
Asheville got straight set wins from #1 Adrien Langeard, Matt Waissen and Pete Conaty.
The historic week began on Tuesday when the Bulldogs won at Furman. 4-3. It was Asheville's first ever victory over the Paladins. On Saturday, the Bulldogs downed King College, 7-0. The Tornados entered the match unbeaten at 10-0.
"This was a great victory for our team today," stated Asheville coach Lise Gregory. "We've been making steady progress over the years and this week was a big one for our guys.
"We still have another month to play and plenty of tough matches to go," added Gregory.
