Men's Tennis Stuns Furman 4-3

GREENVILLE, S.C. - The UNC Asheville men's tennis team picked up a historic victory Tuesday afternoon as the Bulldogs downed Furman 4-3 at the Mickel Tennis Center.

The win was the first ever for UNC Asheville (7-6) against the Paladins (4-12). Asheville won the doubles points and then picked up three singles victories to earn the victory.

The Bulldogs earned the doubles point by winning two matches. Thomas Rees and Adrien Langeard got a win at #2 doubles 8-2, while Furman's #3 doubles team won its match, 8-0. The point came down to #1 doubles. Matt Waissen and Jonas Brobeck were able to outlast the Paladins top doubles team of Alex Christ and Joel Cook, 9-7.

In singles action, the Bulldogs won two key matches in three sets. Matt Waissen edged Alex Christ, 6-7, 7-6, 6-4 at #2 flight. Thomas Rees won at #4 singles. He downed Jacob Behal, 6-4, 4-6, 6-4. Ryan Matthews had a straight set win as he roared past Robbie Aru, 6-2, 6-4.

The win snapped a frustrating three-game losing streak for the Bulldogs. Asheville is home on Saturday when the Bulldogs entertain King College at the ARC Downtown location at 11 a.m.
