ROCK HILL, S.C. - UNC Asheville junior guard Grace Blaylock connected on seven 3-pointers against Winthrop on Saturday afternoon, setting the single game record for treys in a game by a Bulldog, but the Blue & White could overcome an early deficit as they fell 84-68 to the Lady Eagles.
Blaylock scored 23 for Asheville, a new career-high for the Blue Ridge, Va., native. However, Winthrop would get a game-high 24 from Diana Choibekova, who also had a team-high 11 rebounds. The Bulldogs also committed 22 turnovers in the game, leading to 33 Winthrop points.
"There were some positives for us in the game, but we just committed too many turnovers," said Asheville head coach Betsy Blose. "Winthrop started off well but we were able to fight back and get ourselves close, but they were able to go on a run each time to keep us at arm's length."
Along with Blaylock three other Bulldogs scored in double figures, with Shonese Jones scoring 15, Kelli Riles scoring 12 and Leah Wormack scoring 11. Riles also had a game-high 14 rebounds, giving her a sixth double-double for the season.
With the loss the Bulldogs fall to 6-10 overall and 2-3 in Big South Conference play while Winthrop improves to 8-8 on the year with a 2-2 mark in league games.
Samiya Wright scored 18 for the Lady Eagles while teammate Dequasha McClanahan scored 16. McClanahan also tallied a career-high 12 assists in helping Winthrop to the victory.
Winthrop ran out to a 30-11 lead to start the game, but the Bulldogs were able to chip away at the lead over the final eight minutes of the first half, cutting the lead to eight at 40-32 heading into the half.
Asheville started the second half on a 12-5 run and would pull to within three points at 45-42, but the Lady Eagles would score eight unanswered points to go up 53-42 with 13:44 to go.
The Bulldogs pulled to within three again with 10:38 to go at 55-52, but once again the Lady Eagles would answer with a run, this time scoring 22 to just eight points by Asheville. Winthrop would keep a double-digit lead the rest of the way before eventually winning by 16.
Asheville will be back in action on Monday when the Bulldogs travel to Clinton, S.C., to take on Big South foe Presbyterian College. Game time is set for 7 p.m. with a live internet audio stream available at www.UNCABulldogs.com.
