Women's Basketball Faces Winthrop on the Road on Saturday

ASHEVILLE, N.C. - The UNC Asheville women's basketball team hopes to picks up its third straight win when the Bulldogs travel to Winthrop Saturday afternoon starting at 1 p.m. Saturday's game will be broadcast on 880-AM starting with the pre-game show at 12:45 p.m. There will be a free audio stream for the game at www.uncabulldogs.com.

The Lady Eagles will face a rejuvenated Asheville (6-9, 2-2 BSC) squad on Saturday. The Bulldogs picked up two impressive home victories last weekend as they beat Coastal Carolina 69-60 last Saturday and the roared past Charleston Southern 75-68 Monday night.

"We had a great weekend," commented Bulldog coach Betsy Blose. "I was really proud of our team for beating two good teams and winning two close games. Our team really fought hard in each game and hopefully we can build on that success.

"However, now we need to translate that to wins on the road," added Blose. "We've got two tough road games coming up and have to be ready to play them."

Winthrop is 7-8 on the season and 1-2 in league play. Dequesha McClanahan leads the Big South in scoring with a 20.5 average.

"Winthrop has a good team and is playing well right now," declared Blose. "They're very tough to beat at home."

Freshman Shonese Jones leads Asheville in scoring with a 13.4 average, followed by Lindsey Thompson's 12.7 mark. Kelli Riles continues to lead the Big South in rebounding with an 11.6 average. She's seventh nationally in that category.

BULLDOG NOTES

Asheville is looking for its first road win of the season as the Bulldogs are 0-7 in enemy territory this year. Betsy Blose's club went 4-4 in league road games a year ago.

The Bulldogs last two wins have seen them rally in the second half as they trailed at halftime of each contest.

Asheville swept the Big South Conference awards this week. Lindsey Thompson was named Big South Conference Player of the Week, while freshman Leah Womack was named Rookie of the Week.

The Bulldogs and Eagles each won on the road last season. Winthrop rallied from a 15-point first-half deficit to down Asheville 71-64 at Justice Center. The Bulldogs won late in the season at the Winthrop Coliseum, 66-61.

Head Coach Betsy Blose is seventh all-time in the Big South with 124 career wins.

Grace Blaylock has 28 field goals, 27 of them three-pointers.

Kellie Riles has 608 career rebounds. She is ninth all-time at Asheville in career rebounds. Riles has posted five double-doubles on the season.

The Bulldogs have won four of their last six games.

Lindsey Thompson scored a season-high 26 points against Charleston Southern. She has 15 assists in the past two games.
