Thompson & Wormack Earn Big South Honor

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (BigSouthSports.com) – UNC Asheville's Lindsey Thompson has been named the Big South Conference Women's Basketball Choice Hotels Player of the Week, while teammate Leah Wormack was tabbed The Crons Brand Freshman of the Week for games played Jan. 3-9, the League announced today.
Thompson, a senior from Copper Hill, Va., shot 45 percent and averaged 22 points per game to lead her squad to a pair of wins over Coastal Carolina and Charleston Southern, who were both unbeaten in Big South play coming into the contests. The guard got her week started with 21 points on 46 percent from the floor, a pair from downtown and 4-of-4 from the line in the 69-60 win over Coastal Carolina on Jan. 7. She also chipped in three boards, eight assists and three steals against the Chanticleers, then ranked No. 34 in the CollegeInsider.com Mid Major Poll. Two days later against Charleston Southern, Thompson connected on 44 percent from the floor, 4-of-8 from long range and 6-of-6 from the line to finish with 26 points as the Bulldogs downed the Bucs, 75-68. She also dished out seven helpers and came away with four boards and one steal in the win. The honor marks her first Player of the Week nod this season.
Wormack, a forward from Cumberland, Md., averaged 14 points per game and shot 63 percent from the field to help Asheville to two Big South wins last week. Against Coastal, Wormack posted a 17-point, 10-rebound double-double as she nailed 7-of-10 from the floor and added three from the charity stripe. She also chipped in three blocks and an assist in the win. She closed her week out with 11 points on 56 percent shooting, four rebounds and an assist in the win over Charleston Southern. The honor marks her third Big South Freshman of the Week plaudit this season.
