ASHEVILLE, N.C. - The UNC Asheville women's basketball team will play 16 home games in their new arena this season as head coach Betsy Blose announces the Bulldogs 2011-12 schedule.
Asheville will mark its first year in Kimmel Arena with 15 regular-season games, one exhibition game and the host of the first ever Asheville Collegiate Basketball Invitational.
"We're very pleased to be playing 16 times in our new Kimmel Arena," stated Blose. "Our team is so excited about our beautiful new facility and we can't wait to start playing some games here.
"I think we have a good schedule for us," added Blose. "It's a challenging schedule but it's a schedule that I think we can be competitive with.
"With the addition of Campbell, the Big South Conference gets even more challenging than in the past," Blose also said. "We want to be playing our best basketball at the end of the season and into the conference tournament."
The Bulldogs will play an exhibition game against Bluefield College on Nov. 7 in their first ever action in Kimmel Arena. Asheville opens the regular season at home when the Bulldogs host Winston-Salem State on Saturday, Nov. 12 at 2 p.m.
Blose's club heads to mountain rival Western Carolina on Nov. 16 before coming back to Kimmel to face Montreat (Nov. 19). Asheville has a two-game road trip to Furman (Nov. 21) and George Mason (Nov. 27) and then closes out November with a home date vs. USC Upstate (Nov. 30).
The Asheville Collegiate Basketball Invitational will take place on Saturday, Dec. 10 with a double-header. In the first game, Wofford faces Radford at 2 p.m., followed by the Bulldogs game with Appalachian State starting at 4:30 p.m.
The Bulldogs finish the month of December with three road games and two contests at Kimmel. The road games are a first-time meeting with Kennesaw State (Dec. 17) and a return game at South Carolina State (Dec. 19). Asheville returns home for games with Mercer (Dec. 21) and Brevard (Dec. 28). Blose's team opens Big South Conference play at High Point on New Year's Eve (Dec. 31).
In January, the Bulldogs begin 2012 on the road at Big South Conference newcomer Campbell (Jan. 2) before returning to Kimmel for two league games vs. Coastal Carolina (Jan. 7) and Charleston Southern (Jan. 9). Asheville returns to the road to play at Winthrop (Jan. 14) and Presbyterian College (Jan. 16).
The Bulldogs finish the 2011-12 season with two home games as the Bulldogs entertain Campbell (March 2) and High Point (March 5). The Big South Conference Tournament will be held at High Point from March 9-11.
