CULLOWHEE, N.C. - In a match that saw 33 tie scores and 12 lead changes the UNC Asheville volleyball team dropped a 3-1 decision to regional-rival Western Carolina on Tuesday evening at the Ramsey Center on the campus of the Catamounts, falling 25-22, 23-25, 26-28 and 23-25.

Cindi Miller recorded a team-high 18 kills with Holly Shelton chipping in 14 of her own to Asheville's total. As a team the Bulldogs posted 59 kills, three more than WCU, but also committed six more attack errors on the night.

With the loss the Bulldogs fall to 5-6 on the year while Western improves to 3-8.

The Catamounts were led on offense by Caitlin Piechota who tallied 18 kills while committing only two attack errors in the match. Abbey Scroggins posted 12 kills and Jordan Timmerman recorded 11 in helping WCU to the four-set victory.

Setter Hallie Morse earned 41 assists for the Bulldogs with libero Alex Stewart adding 26 digs on defense. Anna Moore posted three blocks on the night for the Blue & White.

Western's Brittany Lysik had 39 assists in directing the Catamounts' offense with Paige McConlogue chipping in 22 digs. Rebecca Stoltz recorded an impressive five blocks on the night, including one solo.

The two teams battled back and forth to a 19-19 tie in the first set before Asheville was able to finish the frame on a 6-3 run to earn the 25-22 victory, earning the win on a pair of kills by Moore. The second set saw another seesaw battle in which WCU was able to hold off the Bulldogs for a 25-23 victory, evening the match at one set apiece.

In an epic third set that saw the two teams race out to a tie at 20-20, neither team was able to reach a two-point advantage until the Catamounts blocked an attack by Miller to pick up the 28-26 victory. The fourth set was another nail-biter, with Asheville rallying back from a five-point deficit to tie the game at 23.

Unfortunately for the Bulldogs, the Catamounts were able to score the next two points to earn the 25-23 set victory.

The Bulldogs will next be in action on one week from tonight on Sept. 20, as they will travel to Durham, N.C., to take on North Carolina Central in a match set to begin at 7 p.m.
