Rees Captures Title at UNC Greensboro

GREENSBORO, N.C. - Thomas Rees captured the A3 flight championship at the UNC Greensboro Fall Invitational on Sunday to highlight the Bulldogs performance this weekend.

Rees won four matches and stunned top-seeded Virginia Tech's Kevin Castellow in the finals, 7-6, 2-6, 6-3.

In Rees' march to the championship, he won three three-set matches. He knocked off Will Kent (UNCG) 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 in the first round, edged Matt Parker (Gardner-Webb) in the quarterfinals, 7-6, 2-6, 6-3 and then roared past Stan Vaughn (Liberty) 6-4, 6-2 in the semifinals.

Asheville had impressive performances throughout the weekend.

"This was a great start to the year," explained Bulldog assistant coach Tom Hand. "We really played well up-and-down the line-up during the weekend."

Adrien Langeard had a great weekend as he reached the finals of the A1 singles. He defeated Korhan Ates (Gardner-Web) in the first round, 6-2, 6-0 and then stunned top seeded Trpinmir Kujundzic of Virginia Tech, 6-4, 4-6, 6-3. Langeard won a semifinal match over Fernando Guillen of Campbell, 6-3, 6-3. Langeard fell in the finals to Mauricio Anton (Virginia Tech), 7-5, 6-3.

 Newcomer John Schubel had some good results in the A3 flight, as well. He knocked off Randy Phillips (UNCG) 2-6, 6-4, 7-5.  He then posted a 6-2, 6-2 victory against James Jones (Campbell) to get to the semifinals. Schubel fell to Castellow (Virginia Tech) in the semis, 6-3, and 6-3 and then dropped a 6-2, 6-4 decision the consolation round.

Ryan Matthews earned a win in the A2 singles. He defeated Alejandrop Espitia (N.C. Central) 6-1, 7-6. Matthews lost in the second round to Josep Baro of Campbell, 6-4, 6-0. In the consolation round, he fell to Noboyoshi Tanaka (Longwood), 6-2, 6-3.

In the A2 singles, Jonas Brobeck lost to eventual flight winner Adrian Rossino of Campbell, 6-4, 7-6.

Alex Appelt competed in the A4 singles draw. He lost in three close sets to Landon Rogers (Campbell), 3-6, 7-6, 7-6. Newcomers Will Goldberg and Peter Conaty fared a little better as they each won first-round matches. Goldberg knocked off Blake Dunlap (Gardner-Webb) 6-2, 6-3 before falling to top-seeded Jimmy Roche (UNCG) 6-2, 6-1. Conaty defeated Jimmy Brown (N.C. Central) 6-2, 6-3. He then lost in the next round to Matt Slameca (Liberty, 6-0, 6-3).

Applelt advanced to the consolation draw where he split a pair of matches. He beat Jamal Hoyte (N.C. Central) 6-2, 6-0 before losing due to an injury in the next match.

On the doubles side, the team of Rees-Langeard upset Virginia Tech's team of Zach Pine and Castellow, 8-2 in the A Doubles flight. They lost in the quarterfinals to eventual champion David Clauera-Fernando Guillen of Campbell, 8-6.

Also playing in the A flight were Matt Waissen and Jonas Brobeck. They lost in the first round to Stan Vaughn and Siim Tuus of Liberty, 8-2.

Asheville had two doubles teams in the B flight. The doubles team of Appelt and Goldberg and Conaty and Schubel won matches in the consolation round.

The Bulldogs next fall tournament will be the Wofford Invitational on Oct. 8.
