GREENVILLE, S.C. - Sean de Silva scored early in the second overtime period to give College of Charleston a 2-1 overtime win over UNC Asheville on the final day of the Furman Invitational at Stone Stadium Sunday afternoon.
The Bulldogs (0-4-1) played a man down for most of the second half and overtime after Bryan Bartels was red-carded in the 63rd minute.
The Cougars (3-1-1) ended up winning the tournament over the host Paladins by goal differential. Asheville placed two players on the All-Tournament team in Jake Hagedorn and Lassi Hurskainen.
"I thought we defended well when we down to 10 men, but Charleston did a good job of putting us under pressure the last 25 minutes of regulation and in overtime," stated Asheville coach Matt Kern. "We had some good attacking sequences in the first half, and early in the second half, but struggled to possess the ball late in the game.
"However, I was very proud of effort today and this weekend," added Kern. "We have played some very good soccer teams in the first few weeks of the season and been close in all of these matches. Our guys just need to hang in there, and we will be OK before the year is out."
Andy Craven opened the scoring in the match for College of Charleston when he scored at 17:55 on a shot from seven yards out.
It stayed 1-0 for the Cougars as Bulldog goalkeeper Lassi Hurskainen was brilliant. He made 10 saves on the day.
Asheville picked up the equalizer at 55:21 when Sam Rossabi set up Jake Hagedorn. Hagedorn scored on a header from six yards to tie the match at 1-1.
It stayed 1-1 as Hurskainen made six saves in the second half. The Bulldogs were able to get to the second overtime period before de Silva scored the game-winner on a header at 103:56.
Asheville will have some time off and will not play again until Monday, Sept. 19 when the Bulldogs host Brevard College at Greenwood Field starting at 4 p.m.
