Foster & Miller Lead Bulldogs Past Chattanooga

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. - Senior outside hitter Cindi Miller accounted for 16 kills while sophomore middle blocker Meredith Foster tallied 14 of her own to help lead the UNC Asheville volleyball team past UT-Chattanooga on Saturday afternoon at the 2011 Country Inn & Suites Invitational.
Asheville finished the day with 53 team kills, 72 digs and 11 total blocks in the 3-1 defeat of the Mocs out of the Southern Conference. The Bulldogs took the first two sets 25-20 and 25-23 before falling in the third 23-25. The fourth set saw the Blue & White earn a 25-22 victory with a block on the final point to improve their overall record to 5-5 on the season.
Chattanooga drops to 1-8 on the season after falling to in-state rival Tennessee Tech 3-2 earlier in the day.
Senior setter Hallie Morse collected 42 assists while libero Alex Stewart collected 32 digs on defense. Anna Moore recorded a team-high six blocks (one solo) with Morse, Holly Shelton and Rachel Wells collecting three blocks apiece.
Heather Parman recorded a match-high 26 kills for the Mocs, hitting for a .317 average in the process. Christina Teter and Jennifer Kuroski added 17 and 13 kills, respectively, and Tess Kosycarz tallied 61 assists directing the Chattanooga offense.
The Mocs tallied 66 kills as a team, but also committed 24 attach errors, 13 service errors and eight block errors in the loss.
Asheville trailed for much of the first set but took the lead midway through at 15-14 on a kill by Foster. Chattanooga would tie the game up again at 16 points apiece but the Bulldogs went on a 5-0 run at that point and would win the set by the final of 25-20.
The second set saw the two teams battle back and forth to a 22-22 tie before Asheville would close out the set with a 25-23 win on another kill by Foster, giving the Blue & White a 2-0 advantage heading into the break.
In the third set with the score tied at 13 points apiece the Mocs were able to get a two point advantage and then hold off the Bulldogs for a 25-23 win as Chattanooga was able to stay alive.
The fourth set saw the Bulldogs jump out to an early advantage, forcing Chattanooga to take a timeout with Asheville leading 20-16. Asheville would go up 21-16 coming out of the break only to see the Mocs rally for three consecutive points, forcing head coach Frederico Santos to take a timeout of his own.
Chattanooga would pull within a point of the Bulldogs at 22-21 on a kill by Teter, but consecutive kills by Foster and Moore would give Asheville set point at 24-21. After allowing a point to the Mocs on a kill by Kuroski the Bulldogs would eventually win the set 25-22 on a block my Moore and Wells.
Asheville will next be in action on Tuesday, Sept. 13, when the Bulldogs travel to Cullowhee, N.C., to take on region-rival Western Carolina in a match set to begin at 7 p.m.
