DeRatt & Schumer to Square off on Friday Night

ASHEVILLE, N.C. - Former UNC Asheville baseball teammates Alan DeRatt and Justin Schumer will be together on the field Friday night for the first time in three years. However, they'll be on opposite sides of the dugout as the two are scheduled to pitch against each when the Asheville Tourists host the Augusta GreenJackets at McCormick Field starting at 7:05 p.m.
This will be the first time ever that two former Bulldog pitchers have pitched against each others in professional baseball.
Schumer has been a starter for Augusta all season though he missed a month due to an oblique injury. He has a 3-4 record with a 5.43 ERA. Schumer has recorded 32 strikeouts in 52 innings this season. This will be the second time he's faced the Tourists at McCormick Field this year. Schumer's first start after being on the disabled list came at Asheville on June 1 as he pitched four innings and allowed just two runs to the Tourists. Schumer picked up win against Asheville on June 17 at Augusta when he pitched the first five innings in a 15-5 victory.
DeRatt has pitched primarily at Modesto this season. Modesto is the Colorado Rockies High A franchise in the California League. He has a 3-3 record with a 5.66 ERA. DeRatt has recorded 35 strikeouts in 41.1 innings works. The former Bulldog has also pitched at Tulsa, the Rockies Double A franchise. He worked three games there with a 0-1 record and 5.40 ERA. This will be the third straight year that DeRatt has been an Asheville Tourists. He was a Tourist for the entire 2009 season and part of last year before being promoted to Modesto. DeRatt is only expected to make one start for Asheville as the Tourists' pitching staff has been hit hard by injuries.
Schumer and DeRatt were teammates during the 2007 and 2008 seasons at UNC Asheville. DeRatt finished up in 2008 and was the Big South Conference Pitcher of the Year that season Schumer graduated in 2010 and signed a free agent contract with the San Francisco Giants last summer.
