Wormack Named Freshman Of The Week

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (BigSouthSports.com) – Charleston Southern's Lakeitha Alston has been named the Big South Conference Women's Basketball Choice Hotels Player of the Week, while Leah Wormack from UNC Asheville was tabbed The Crons Brand Freshman of the Week for games played Nov. 29-Dec. 5, the League announced today.
Wormack, a forward from Cumberland, Md., put in a career-high 21 points on 73 percent from the floor against USC Upstate on Nov. 30. She connected on 8-of-11 from the field and added five from the line, to go along with three boards, an assist and one steal. The game marked her first 20-point game of her collegiate career.
This is the second time this season that Wormack has earned this honor.
Alston, a junior from Myrtle Beach, S.C., shot 63 percent and averaged 25 points per contest to lead Charleston Southern to a 2-0 record last week, including a win over ACC foe Clemson on Dec. 4. Against the Tigers, the forward connected on 12-of-20 from the floor for a 60 percent clip and added two from downtown and five from the line to finish with 31 points. She also ripped down 10 boards, dished out two assists and came away with two steals in the 82-77 win. She got her week started with 19 points on 67 percent from the field, one from long range and a pair of free throws in the 64-45 win over the College of Charleston on Nov. 30. Alston also finished the game with four rebounds, a block, an assist and two take-aways.
