FAIRFAX, Va. - The UNC Asheville women's basketball team suffered an 88-59 setback to homestanding George Mason on Sunday afternoon at the Patriot Center, as the Patriots' Taleia Moton tied a career-high in points scored with 30 while teammate Christine Weithman set a career-high with 22 points off the bench.
"George Mason is one of the best teams we'll see all season, and they proved it today," said Asheville head coach Betsy Blose. "We had it on our scouting report that Moton and Weithman were scorers and we just didn't execute defensively."
Asheville (2-3) shot 29.4 percent for the game overall, converting 20-of-68 field goals in the game. The Bulldogs were led on offense by Kelli Riles, who scored 17 points and pulled down 15 rebounds, earning her second double-double of the season.
Freshman Shonese Jones scored a career-high 14 points while senior Lindsey Thompson chipped in 11 to the Bulldogs' total. Freshman Leah Wormack also posted double figures for Asheville, scoring 10 points.
GMU (4-1) outscored Asheville 42-22 in the paint while also outscoring the Bulldogs 23-10 off of turnovers. The Patriots also won the rebounding margin 41-40 and out-blocked Asheville 8-1.
The Bulldogs will next be in action on Nov. 30 when they host region-rival USC Upstate. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. at Kimmel Arena as the Bulldogs look to stay undefeated at home. Mason hosts UMass on Dec. 1 in its next contest.
