Wormack Named Freshman Of The Week

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (BigSouthSports.com) - Radford's DaNaria Erwin Spencer has been named the Big South Conference Women's Basketball Choice Hotels Player of the Week, while Leah Wormack from UNC Asheville was tabbed The Crons Brand Freshman of the Week for games played Nov. 14-21, the League announced today.
Wormack, a forward from Cumberland, Md., averaged 8.3 points and 7.0 rebounds in three contests for the Bulldogs last week. She connected on 10-of-19 from the field in the three-game span to finish with a 53 percent clip. In the win over Montreat on Nov. 19, Wormack narrowly missed a double-double as she finished with nine points and 10 boards. She put in 11 points against Furman on 71 percent from the floor and 1-of-1 from the line on Nov. 21. For the week, Wormack poured in 25 points, ripped down 21 rebounds and posted five rejections. The honor is her first Freshman of the Week plaudit this season.
Erwin Spencer, a sophomore from Charlotte, N.C., averaged 22 points per game, 50 percent from the field and dished out 19 assists to lead her squad to a 3-0 record last week. After putting in 18 points against Winston-Salem State on Nov. 16 and 21 points against USC Upstate three days later, Erwin Spencer highlighted her week with 27 points on 60 percent shooting in the win over UNC Greensboro on Nov. 21. The guard also chipped in nine helpers, five rebounds and two steals in the win over the Spartans. She connected on 20-of-25 from the charity stripe in the three-game span, including a perfect 9-for-9 against the UNCG. She collected a total of 16 rebounds for the week, as well as seven take-aways. The honor marks her first Big South Player of the Week nod this season.
Also nominated for women's basketball Player of the Week for Week 2: Jazmine Cooper (Campbell), Lakeitha Alston (Charleston Southern), Olivia Irick (Coastal Carolina), Cheyenne Parker (High Point), Avery Warley (Liberty), Mariah Pietrowski (Presbyterian College), Lindsey Thompson (UNC Asheville) and Diana Choibekova (Winthrop).
Also nominated for women's basketball Freshman of the Week for Week 2: Kierra Gaines (Campbell), Shatia Cole (Coastal Carolina) and Noelle Carter (Presbyterian College).
