MIAMI -- Former UNC Asheville center fielder Kevin Mattison has been impressive in the Arizona Fall League. The Florida Marlins certainly have taken notice, and on Friday, the team rewarded him by placing him on its 40-man roster.
In all, the Marlins promoted four of their Minor Leaguers to the 40-man roster. Joining Mattison are lefty relievers Ramon Benjamin and Dan Jennings, as well as right-handed starter Tom Koehler.
Friday is the deadline to set rosters in preparation for the Rule 5 Draft, which will take place at the end of the Winter Meetings next month in Dallas.
Mattison, 26, is a Fort Lauderdale, Fla., native who played for the Bulldogs from 2005-08. A left-handed hitter and thrower, he played in 130 games at Double-A Jacksonville, batting .260 with 17 doubles, 16 triples, eight home runs and a .353 on-base percentage.
Mattison, who sports a handlebar mustache, has been a standout in the AFL, where he is hitting .349 with two doubles, five triples and six home runs in 25 games.
