Asheville Hands SE Louisiana 3-0 Defeat
09.03.2010 | Women's Volleyball
MOBILE, Ala. -- Playing in the first match of the 2010 South Alabama Invitational the UNC Asheville volleyball team defeated Southeastern Louisiana, 3-0, to even its record at 2-2 on the young season with senior outside hitter Kelsey Benorden leading the Bulldogs offensively with 13 kills and senior setter Rachel Guinane racking up 32 assists.
Head coach Julie Torbett is glad for the victory, but still sees room for improvement.
“We played a little sloppy and we didn't control the match as well as we could have until the third set,” said Torbett. “We only had four blocks against 23 hitting errors for Southeastern, so we've got to do a better job of controlling the match and not relying on our opponents errors.”
Benorden also led the Bulldogs defensively as the Knoxville, Tenn., native added 15 digs to her match totals, to go along with freshman libero Alex Stewart, who collected 12 digs for the Blue & White.
The Bulldogs will play the host team tonight, the University of South Alabama, in a match set to begin at 7 p.m. (CST). Coach Torbett expects a tougher environment playing against the Jaguars on their home court.
“We're going to have to perform better tonight against USA because we're playing in front of a loud and rowdy crowd, and we've not experienced that yet this season.”
This evening will mark the second time that the Bulldogs have squared off against USA, with the first meeting occurring during the 2001 season, a 3-2 victory for the Jaguars.
