ASHEVILLE, N.C. - Senior Nathan White outlasted teammate Thomas Rees in the finals of the singles B flight Sunday afternoon on the final day of the UNC Asheville Men's Open at the Crowne Plaza Tennis Center.
White won when Rees came down with an injury in the third set of their tie-breaker. White won, 5-7, 6-3, 6-6 (5-3) retired. It marked the second straight week that White went unbeaten in singles play in a tournament.
"Nathan is playing very well right now and both he and Thomas played a terrific match," stated Bulldog coach Lise Gregory.
Nicolai Nonnebroich and White made it to the finals of the doubles championship but fell to the Gardner-Webb team of Evgeny Slesarev of Julien Belair. Slesarev captured the flight A title with a 6-4, 6-2 victory over Scott McCormick of Brevard.
"We played some good tennis over the weekend but picked up some nagging injuries that we're going to have to watch," admitted Gregory.
The Bulldogs play next at the Wofford Open on Oct. 8.
