Miller Ties Career-High 22 Kills, Asheville Earns First Victory Of The Season

HARRISONBURG, Va. -- Junior outside hitter Cindi Miller tied a career-high for kills with 22 with teammate Kelsey Benorden posting a season-high 17 kills as UNC Asheville defeated Stetson University, 3-1, to earn its first victory of the 2010 season at the JMU Coca-Cola Classic volleyball tournament on Saturday evening.
Miller previously recorded 22 kills against Liberty University on Oct. 10 of last season. Asheville improves to 1-2 on the year with the victory.
Asheville dropped the first set of the match, 25-23 before rallying in the second set for a 25-15 victory. The Bulldogs would take the third set, 25-23 and then the fourth, 25-18 to earn their first win of the season.
Rachel Guinane tallied a season-high 41 assists directing the Asheville offense, while Benorden tallied 25 digs on defense. Meredith Foster and Rachel Olivo each recorded three blocks for the Bulldogs with Alex Stewart and Miller adding 19 and 14 digs, respectively.
Kaley Melville earned nine kills to lead the Hatters on offense with setter Kelli Carneal posting 31 assists. Monique Russell posted 20 digs and Ellen Hawks posted four blocks on defense for Stetson.
The Bulldogs will be back in action next weekend when they travel to Mobile, Ala., to take part in the South Alabama Invitational. Asheville will play Alabama State on Friday at 2:30 p.m. to start the tournament before facing off against host South Alabama at 7 p.m. later that day. They will then close out the tournament on Saturday with Alabama A&M at 11:30 a.m. and then Southeastern Louisiana at 1:30 p.m.
