JUPITER, FL. - Former UNC Asheville outfielder Kevin Mattison has been promoted in the Florida Marlins organization for the 2010 season. Mattison will be a member of the Jupiter Hammerheads. Jupiter is a member of the Florida State League and is a Class A Advanced franchise.

Mattison played last year for the Greensboro Grasshoppers in the South Atlantic League. He played in 95 games for Greensboro before getting injured late in the season and missing the final month. Mattison hit .250 for the Grasshoppers and hit 15 home runs with 15 doubles. He led Greensboro in stolen bases with 41 and was second in the league before getting injured.

"I'm really happy for Kevin to be moved up," stated UNC Asheville coach Tom Smith. "I know the Marlins think very highly of him, and we'll be rooting for him this year."

Mattison played for Marlins in Spring Training in two exhibition games. He played once against the Washington Nationals and then played against the Grasshoppers in Greensboro last Saturday. He had two hits for Florida on Saturday. Mattison scored a run against the Nationals.

Asheville has another player in a minor league organization and that's right-hander Alan DeRatt with the Colorado Rockies. He played last year for the hometown Asheville Tourists and helped get the Tourists into the playoffs in the second half of the season. At this time, DeRatt is being left in extended spring training and could be called up later in the season.

"We hope Alan gets moved up soon," said Smith. "We wish he was with a team to start the year but the Rockies still like him and hopefully he'll get an opportunity."
