Pearson Named Big South Women's Track Athlete of the Week

Pearson Wins 200 and Takes Third in 100

CHARLESTON, S.C. - Junior sprinter Natalie Pearson won the 200 meters and took third in the 100 meters to highlight UNC Asheville's performance at the Big South Conference Outdoor Track and Field meet that was concluded on Saturday.

Pearson helped the Bulldog women's team finish in eighth place at the meet with 37 points. The men's squad took ninth with 28.50 points.

Pearson won the 200 meters by setting a school-record with a new time of 23.25. She edged Ikeiylah Brown of Coastal Carolina who finished second with a time of 23.27.

Pearson took third in the 100 meters with another school record. She finished with a time of 11.66.

In addition, the junior earned a spot on the All-Academic team for her work in the classroom.

The Bulldog relay teams had a great day. Each relay team came in fourth. The 4x100 team of Ashlei Clodfelter, Natalie Pearson, Eureka Jones and Sarah Gentry had a time of 48.39. The 4x400 relay team of Whitney Stafford, Gentry, Jones and Kalmeijer finished with a time of 4:00.

Stafford came in sixth with 400 Hurdles at a time of 1:06. Kalmeijer took sixth in the 800 meters with a time of 2:18.18.

In distance events, Melanie Kulesz finished 10th in the 5000 meters at 18:56. Katie Olert came in 14th in the 1500 meters at a time of 5:40. Kylie Smith took 15th during the 10,000 meters at 44:44.

Highlighting the field events was Corrie Trotter taking ninth in the high jump at 1.56 meters. Clodfelter came in ninth in the triple jump with a jump of 10.80 meters.

On the men's side, the Bulldogs had some excellent performance with their distance runners.

Sophomore Sam Maynard took third in the 800 meters (1:53) and fourth in the 1500 meters (3:56.14). Sophomore Eliud Chirchir finished fifth in the 1500 (3:56.55) and seventh in the 800 (1:54). Carlos Lopez came in eighth in the 1500 (4:00.05).

Ian Boyd highlighted the field events with a fifth-place finish in the pole vault with a leap of 3.96 meters.

Simon Haake, who finished fourth in the javelin on Thursday, also competed in the decathlon and came in ninth place. He finished first in the javelin completion of the decathlon with a throw of 61.75 meters.

Haake was also recognized for his work in the classroom by earning a spot on the All-Academic team.
