UNC Asheville Baseball Set for Weekend Series at McCormick Field
04.15.2010 | Baseball
The Bulldogs (11-18, 5-7 BSC) picked up their first league road sweep in four years when Asheville swept Presbyterian College last weekend thanks to some great starting pitching. The trio of Ryan Dull, Drew Spear and Justin Schumer limited the Blue Hose to just one run each game.
"When you get good starting pitching, you always have a chance," commented first-year Asheville head coach Tom Smith. "Our starters were just great last weekend at Presbyterian. We're going to have to be even better against a very good Winthrop team."
The Eagles have faced a tough early-season schedule and bring a deceiving 15-17 overall record and 3-6 BSC worksheet into McCormick Field this weekend.
"Winthrop plays a rugged non-conference schedule, so their record in quite misleading," admitted Smith. "They're starting to play good baseball and going to be heard from in the league before the year is over. We hope they don't roar too loudly this weekend."
The Bulldogs played one non-conference game this week and fell to USC Upstate on Wednesday, 9-6 when the Spartans rallied for eight runs in the final two innings.
"We didn't finish the game very well against USC Upstate," stated Smith. "However, that game is behind us and now it's time to get ready for Winthrop."
NOTES
- 1. UNC Asheville has not beaten Winthrop in a conference series since the 2002 season when the Bulldogs won 2-of-3.
- 2. Ryan Dull was named Big South Pitcher of the Week on Monday after he tossed his second complete game of the year against Presbyterian College last Friday in a 2-1 victory.
- 3. The Bulldogs are 5-7 in league play and already have as many conference wins as they had all of last year (5-21).
- 4. Freshman catcher Ian Graham leads Asheville in hitting with a .382 average. He is tied for the lead team lead in doubles with 10. He has not made an error yet this season.
