ASHEVILLE, N.C. - The UNC Asheville women's basketball team will be the eighth seed in the upcoming 2010 Advance Auto Parts Big South Conference Women's Basketball Championship to be held at High Point. The Bulldogs take on top-seeded Gardner-Webb Friday afternoon starting at Noon.

Asheville (8-21, 3-13 BSC) played Gardner-Webb (26-3, 15-1 BSC) tough both times this year. On Jan. 9 at Gardner-Webb, the Bulldogs led for much of the first half and early in the second half before the Runnin' Bulldogs went on a 20-0 run en route to a 70-54 victory. At Justice Center on Feb. 15, Gardner-Webb held off a late Asheville rally to post a 74-63 victory.

The Bulldogs last played on Friday night and lost a close 73-66 decision at home to Winthrop. Asheville set a Big South record in the loss by going a perfect 23-of-23 from the free throw line.

"We're playing hard and battling, but we've got a tough game in front of with Gardner-Webb," commented Asheville coach Betsy Blose. "Gardner-Webb is having an outstanding year and is on a mission to win the Big South championship. We're going to have to be at our best to have a shot on Friday.

"It's encouraging that we played them so well both games," added Blose. "However, we played well, but Gardner-Webb still managed to win and that says a lot about how good they are."

Lindsey Montgomery continues to lead the Bulldogs. She has posted a league-leading 12 double-doubles on the year and is averaging 12.3 points and 10.1 rebounds per game. Red-shirt junior Kiana Rainey has been on a roll the past three games. She has posted two straight double-doubles, the first of her career, and scored a career-best 16 points vs. Winthrop on Friday.
