03.08.2010 | Baseball
Mattison made his major league debut on Monday against the Washington Nationals. He helped the Marlins defeat the Nats, 11-2. Mattison went 0-for-2 at the plate, while playing left-field and scored a run.
The Kernersville native had an excellent year in 2009 before a finger injury in late July sidelined him for the rest of the year. He was the Greensboro Grasshoppers starting center-fielder last season. He finished with a .250 batting average with 15 home runs and 17 RBI. Mattison was second in the league in stolen bases with 41 before getting injured. His 15 home runs were still second best on the team, despite missing the last month of the year.
Mattison was selected by the Florida Marlins in the 28th round with the 838th pick of the 2008 Major League Baseball First Year Players Draft. He was a second team All-Big South performer in 2008.
At UNC Asheville, Mattison hit .286 with a career-high 11 home runs as a lead off hitter in 2008.. He is the school's and Big South's all-time leader in career triples (23). Kevin is also the career leader in runs scored at Asheville with 192.
