03.01.2010 | Women's Basketball

ASHEVILLE, N.C. - Lindsey Thompson and Kendall Shepard had 15 points each as UNC Asheville outlasted Radford in overtime, 75-68 in a Big South Conference's women's basketball action Monday night at Justice Center.

The Bulldogs (8-20, 3-12 BSC) sent the game to overtime when Thompson hit a three-pointer with 1.7 seconds left to knot the game at 63-63. In overtime, Asheville scored the first five points, including another trey from Thompson to take a 68-63 lead, and went on to the victory.

The Highlanders (6-20, 5-10 BSC) were led by Ashley Buckhannon's 20 points, while Kymesha Alston added 17 points and 11 rebounds. Victoria Hamilton finished with a double-double at 10 points and 13 rebounds.

The Bulldogs also had two players with double-doubles. Lindsey Montgomery earned her 12th double-double of the year with 12 points and 11 rebounds. Kiana Rainey had the first double-double of her career with 10 points and 10 rebounds.

Radford rallied from a six-point second-half deficit with a 14-3 run to race to a 62-57 lead with 1:33 left in the game.  Buckhannon's three-point play gave the Highlanders the five-point lead at the 1:33 mark.

But Asheville fought back and cut the lead to 62-60 on a long trey from Shepard 10 seconds later. The Bulldogs had two chances to two but missed two lay-ups on their next two possessions. The Highlanders couldn't put the game away as they went 1-of-4 from the free throw lie. Hamilton's free throw made it 63-60 with 12 seconds left.

Asheville quickly got the ball down the court and Grace Blayock found Thompson open on the right wing. The sophomore guard buried the 22-footer to tie the game at 63-63.

In overtime, Rainey hit a short jumper to give the Bulldogs the lead for good off a feed from Thompson at 65-63. Thompson then knocked down a trey on the next possession for 68-63 lead.

The Highlanders crept to 71-68 with 11 seconds left on a tap-in from Buckhannon. However, Asheville put the game away as Thompson and Montgomery hit two free throws each in the final 10 seconds.

The Bulldogs play their final regular season game of the year at home Friday night when they host Winthrop at 7 p.m. Radford finishes up at Liberty on Friday night, also at 7 p.m.
