CONWAY, S.C. - Coastal Carolina placed three players in double figures and went on a 26-2 run in the first half as the Chanticleers downed UNC Asheville 60-41 in a Big South Conference battle at Kimbel Arena Monday night.
The Bulldogs (6-17, 1-9 BSC) were led in scoring by Lindsey Montgomery with 14 points and eight rebounds. Kendall Shepard added 11 points.
Asheville got off to a good start and led 10-3 after the first six minutes of the game. The Bulldogs got four early points from Montgomery and knocked down two 3-pointers.
But then Asheville went ice for the rest of the half. Coastal Carolina went on a 26-2 run to vault to a 29-12 lead late in the first half. During the run, the Bulldogs had 16 turnovers and that helped the home team score 14 points. Asheville scored the final four points of the half as it got baskets from Kelli Riles and Shepard to cut the lead to 29-16.
CCU (14-8, 5-5 BSC) quickly sealed the game early in the second half by going on a 10-2 run to build a 39-18 lead. The Bulldogs could get no closer than 14 points the rest of the way.
Asheville will be at home for the last part of the regular season. The Bulldogs play five of their final six games at Justice Center. The homestand begins this Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m. when Asheville hosts Presbyterian College. Saturday's game will be televised locally by WMYA-TV.
