Cold-Shooting Bulldogs Fall at CSU, 62-54

02.04.2010 | Men's Basketball

NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. - UNC Asheville's seven-game winning streak came to a disappointing end Thursday night at Charleston Southern as the cold-shooting Bulldogs fell to the Bucs 62-54.

Asheville (10-13, 7-5 BSC) could never get untracked on offense. The Bulldogs had nobody in double figures and committed 21 turnovers on the night. John Williams led the visitors with nine points and eight rebounds. Williams did not record a blocked shot in the game and is still tied for the Asheville career lead at 190 with C.J. Walker. J.P. Primm had eight points and eight assists.

The Bulldogs shot just 42 percent (22-of-52) from the field and were a dismal 8-of-18 from the free throw line and 2-of-15 from beyond the arc.

"Charleston Southern slowed the game down, and we didn't respond defensively," stated UNC Asheville coach Eddie Biedenbach. "We didn't practice very well this week and it showed tonight. We shot the ball poorly from the free throw line and the three-point line and that showed we weren't ready to play.

"We had a good effort but just didn't play well from the start," added Biedenbach. "Charleston Southern is a good team and they are very tough to beat at home. You can't play the way we played tonight and expect to win."

Jamarco Warren led CSU (11-11, 6-6 BSC) with 17 points.  The senior guard was 7-of-11 from the field and 3-of-6 from beyond the arc.

The Bulldogs trailed 20-13 in the first half before going on a 14-2 run to race to a 27-22 lead.   A three-point play from Primm gave Asheville the five-point lead at 27-22 with six minutes to go in the opening half.

CSU came back to take a 32-30 lead late in the half before buckets from Williams and Quinard Jackson gave the Dogs a 34-32 halftime lead.

In the second half, CSU quickly seized control by going on a 12-2 run to start play and build a 44-36 lead. Warren had six early points in the run.

The game really slowed down from that point but the Bulldogs could get no closer than three points the rest of the game. Asheville closed to 57-54 with two minutes left on a jumper from freshman D.J. Cunningham but the home team closed the game out with five straight points.

Charleston Southern picked up its first season sweep of Asheville since the 2005-06 season.

The Bulldogs play again on Saturday afternoon when they face Big South-leader Coastal Carolina at Kimbel Arena at 4:30 p.m.
