ASHEVILLE, N.C. - The UNC Asheville baseball team will head to the South Carolina coast this weekend for its second series of the year when the Bulldogs battle College of Charleston in a three-game series that starts Friday at 5 p.m. The series will also feature single games on Saturday and Sunday, both at 1 p.m.

Asheville (1-2) won its opening game for first-year head coach Tom Smith last Friday when it outlasted Campbell 15-11. The Bulldogs dropped a twin bill the next day, losing 5-4 in the first game and 11-2 in the nightcap.

Smith was encouraged at a lot of things last weekend.

"We did a good job in a lot of areas at Campbell," stated Smith "We haven't been on the field much due to the weather so last weekend was the first real chance to play outside since the fall.

"We hit the ball pretty well and only made one error in three games," added Smith. "In the first game against Campbell, we had a pretty big lead and then let Campbell come back. However, we battled back and won the game and that was nice to see.

"There's still a lot for us to do and get better at but right now we're just glad to be playing some games," added Smith. "We're going to try and get better with each game."

The Bulldogs have their work cut out for them this weekend against the Cougars. College of Charleston is a 4-0 on the season as it swept a three-game series against Big South foe Radford last weekend. They knocked off Jacksonville on the road Tuesday night, 15-7.

"We're going to see a pretty good baseball team this weekend in College of Charleston," declared Smith. "They hit the ball pretty good and this is a team that expected to compete for a Southern Conference championship this year. We're going to have to play some good baseball."

Freshman second baseman Robbie McIntosh got off to a good start last weekend and hit. 455 (5-for-12) with two RBI. Shortstop Catlin Carter hit .385 (5-for-13) against the Camels.

On the mound, junior Taylor Wohlwend picked up the save in the win on Friday with three scoreless innings of work. Red-shirt junior David Ricker pitched well during the weekend with three scoreless innings and three strikeouts.
