02.12.2010 | Women's Basketball
The contest with the Blue Hose will also be a Pink Zone game. The Bulldogs will be wearing Pink Sneakers in the game to assist the Women's Basketball Coaches Association in raising breast cancer awareness on the court, across campuses, in communities and beyond. The pink shoes the players will be wearing will be auctioned off after the game. Fans can also make financial donations that will be sent to the Kay Yow/WBCA Cancer Fund.
The Bulldogs (6-17, 1-9 BSC) are trying to break a nine-game Big South Conference losing streak on Saturday. Asheville will also look to avenge 65-54 loss to the Blue Hose (5-17, 3-6 BSC) in Clinton on Jan. 11.
"This is an important game for us," stated Asheville coach Betsy Blose. "We're excited about playing a game on TV and doing our part to support the Pink Zone.
"We're starting a stretch where we're going to be playing a lot of games at home," added Blose. "We need to start winning some games. Our effort has been good but now we need to find ways to win."
Asheville is coming off a 60-41 loss at Coastal Carolina Monday night. The Bulldogs led early 10-3 but the Chanticleers went on a 26-2 run to seize control of the game. Asheville was dealt a blow when sophomore guard Lindsey Thompson was injured and missed the rest of the game. She is questionable for Saturday.
"We got off to a good start but then we just couldn't score for about 15 minutes," declared Blose. "Losing Lindsey Thompson certainly hurt us but you have to rise above injuries and get the job done."
The Bulldogs face a PC team that is playing good basketball. The Blue Hose come to Justice Center with a three-game winning streak, including conference wins over Coastal Carolina and Winthrop.
"Presbyterian beat us pretty good the last time we played and are on a roll coming into our game on Saturday," explained Blose. "They play very good defense that give teams fits. We're going to have to really execute on offense to have a chance at winning."
Junior forward Lindsey Montgomery continues to have an excellent season for the Bulldogs. She leads Asheville in scoring (12.8), rebounding (10.3), blocked shots (27) and steals (33). "Monty" has scored in double figures in seven consecutive games and had nine double-doubles on the year. Her 10.4 rebounding average leads the Big South and is 18th nationally.
