Bulldogs Open Season in Indoor Track and Field at ASU

BOONE, N.C. - The UNC Asheville men's and women's Indoor Track and Field teams opened the winter season on Saturday at the Appalachian State Invitational. Results were not posted until yesterday and here is a rundown of how the Bulldogs did in the first meet of the year.
Highlighting Asheville's performance on the men's side was the work of freshman sprinter Milan Ristic. He tied a school record in the 55 meters with a time of 6.49 and then set a school record in the 200 meters at a time of 22.32.
"Milan did a pretty good job for his first meet," declared Asheville coach Jesse Norman. "We were really excited to bring him into our program. We believe he has a tremendous amount of potential as he'll only get better."
On the women's side, sophomore Melanie Kulesz took third in the mile with a time of 5:21. Alyska Kalmeijer finished in seventh place at 5:39.
Other highlights included good work done by Ashlei Clodfelter in the long jump and triple jump. The sophomore had a 4.75 mark in the long jump and 10.58 leap in the triple jump. Freshman Meredith Foster finished ninth in the high jump at 1.52 meters.
Emily Pineda competed in two different events on the day as she posted a throw of 9.98 meters in the shot put. She then ran a time of 1:06.15 in the 400 meters.
In the 200 meters, Sarah Gentry had time of 27.47, followed by Charlotte Mull (28.93), Whitney Stafford (29.15) and Corey McClintock (29.43).
In the 3000 meters, the Bulldogs had three runners competing. Clair Powell came in sixth at a time of 11:37, followed closely by Kylie Smith (11:41) and Rachel Carson (12:08).
Stafford also competed in the 55 Hurdles (9.27), while McClintock took part in the 55 meters (8.08).
Highlighting the men's side had Carlos Lopez finishing 12th in the 3000 meters (9:24) and Tyler Michael 14th (9:31).
Courtney Henry participated in the long jump (5.19) and triple jump (12.80). Kurt Hibert had a throw of 10.89 meters in the shot put.
Derek Larsen had a time of 8.10 in the 55 meters, followed by Aaron Nix (9.15). Nix competed in the 400 meters (59.50).
In the 800 meters, Sebastian Paniagua had a time of 2:06. Chris Murray posted a time of 2:19.
"Overall, we had a good meet," explained Norman. "It was good to see everyone perform, and we know what we have to work on."
The Bulldogs are off until January 15 when both teams will head back to Appalachian State.
