Shepard Named Big South Player Of The Week

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (BigSouthSports.com) - UNC Asheville's Kendall Shepard has been named the Big South Conference Women's Basketball Choice Hotels Player of the Week, while Dequesha McClanahan of Winthrop was tabbed The Crons Brand Freshman of the Week for games played Dec. 13-20, the League announced today.
Shepard, a senior from Upper Marlboro, Md., averaged 17 points per game and shot 52 percent from the floor to lead the Bulldogs to a 1-1 record last week. The guard got her week started with 22 points on 64 percent from the floor, 3-of-4 from downtown and 5-of-6 from the line to lead Asheville to the 84-69 win over South Carolina State on Dec. 15. She also came down with five boards and dished out four helpers in the win. Three days later at Marquette, Shepard put in 12 points and came away with two boards and three assists.
McClanahan, a guard from Oak Ridge, Tenn., led her squad in scoring with 17 points as the Lady Eagles picked up the 54-51 win over Maine on Dec. 20. She was 6-of-10 from the floor and added four from the line and one from downtown in the contest. She came up big with 40 seconds to play as she converted two free-throws to put the game away for Winthrop. McClanahan also finished the game with six boards, seven assists and two steals.
